Essential Oils

Lemon and Lavender

              Lemon and Lavender

Essential oils are neat products that I use every day, but what are they? They are plant based products that have only natural ingredients, sourced from the best environments in the world. These ingredients are actually aromatic compounds that come from various parts of plants like the flowers, stems, seeds, etc. To get a more complete idea, please check out this article I wrote recently, Essential Oils Belong in Your Medicine Cabinet.

Or if you’d rather not navigate too far away, I can tell you that I have had some amazing experiences with these oils. What is special about these oils is that they support the body’s systems to do what they do best. The human body is an amazing machine. Think about how your brain has to calculate your body’s response time, reflexes, chemistry, electricity, all with the speed of a Cray supercomputer.

Each body system is designed to work efficiently with the other systems, but sometimes things go wrong, especially with the aging process. However there are great interventions  from both traditional pharmaceuticals, and other aspects of Western medicine, along with fantastic healing applications such as massage, acupuncture, Reiki Therapy, Thai Body Work, and of course, essential oils. Here are some examples:

Headaches. I am not necessarily a headache person, AND thankfully I don’t get migraines. But every couple of days I just feel the tiniest bit of one starting. I take my bottle of Peppermint oil, and just wipe one small drop across my forehead. The headache is gone within about 5 or 10 minutes. Seriously!

Peppermint can also help you feel more alert, help with stomach upsets, and support your respiratory function.

How about heartburn? Unfortunately I usually need to start my day with some form of omeprazole. (like Prilosec) It usually keeps the heartburn away OK, but not fantastic. Should I increase my dose of medication? Maybe, but omeprazole has been linked to serious bone fractures in women my age. Yikes! My goal is to get off of the medication entirely.

Of course, certain foods and drink make it worse, but I’m not giving up my morning coffee yet. I am willing to cut down on chocolate and other processed sugars, but in the meantime, I have found that certain essential oils and blends do a pretty good job with the symptoms. There’s a digestion blend that I either rub on my upper chest, or put a few drops in a glass of water* (especially when I’m out for a meal and drinks). Sometimes I follow up the topical application with a drop of Frankincense. Yes, the same stuff that was a gift to the baby Jesus, and for a darn good reason. It’s nearly miraculous!

Just as an FYI ; any reputable manufacturers of essential oils do not make any claims to treat or diagnose any kind of disease. They also don’t make offers of cures or preventions.

I have more great experiences to share, please let me know if you’d like more information, or if you’d like to come to a free Essential Oils class. I’d love to have you experience some of the great benefits of the oils.

*IMPORTANT NOTE – PLEASE DO NOT PUT ESSENTIAL OILS IN PLASTIC WATER BOTTLES. However, certain forms of plastic are OK.  “Typically, HDPE plastic as well as plastics number 1 (PETE) and 2 are safe for use with essential oils. Another alternative is using vessels made of other materials such as glass or certain metals.”
